East Carolina University, or ECU for short, is a public, coeducational, engaged doctoral/research university located in Greenville, which is county seat of Pitt County and principal city of the Greenville, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 85 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, more than 180 000 people, living in The Greenville Metro Area.
ECU was founded in 1907, by the North Carolina General Assembly, as a teacher training school, Greenville being selected as the site of the university in July 1908, the first classes being given one year later. After having its name changed several times, over the years, the institution finally adopted its current name in 1967, to better reflect its mission.
Today, the university offers its students more than 100 bachelor degrees in various areas of study, including in mathematics, construction management, computer science, political science and environmental health, being home to 9 undergraduate colleges, 2 professional schools and a graduate school, the oldest as well as the largest school on campus being the College of Education.
With an enrollment estimated at a number of more than 27 000 students (2009), ECU is the fastest-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system, for 6 consecutive years, and it is also recognized as the largest institution of higher learning in eastern North Carolina, being named the 3rd largest university in the US state of North Carolina, as well.
